The Google Gods are Watching

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I’ve been hearing and reading a lot about Google and their continuing effort to punish sites and individuals who utilize unethical tactics to try to trick them in one way or another. I personally don’t understand why people still think they can fool Google and get past their genius programmers. And more importantly, why they think it’s ok to continue trying and putting either their personal sites or client’s sites at risk. Google is and always will be one step ahead of us. I”ve faced it … they’re much, much smarter than me. I’m not the type to even dabble in spam, but it seems many are. Many are willing to risk biting the hand that feeds them. Perhaps these are the thrill seeker types? Perhaps it’s the challenge and thrill of the chase that spurs their determination?

Anyway, I just read ANOTHER article on a site who saw grey (the Page Rank color that screams “busted”) and am trying to understand why. Google’s “guidelines” are not mere suggestions, they are iron-clad RULES. Obey them. It’s as simple as that. I do … we do as a company … and you should.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I came across the article I’m about to share with you all. Another “Killer Tip” for Google Adsense!

Paid Links and Google’s Take

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

From Matt Cutts Blog -

http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/text-links-and-pagerank/

let me talk about why we consider it outside our guidelines to get PageRank via buying links. Google (and pretty much every other major search engine) uses hyperlinks to help determine reputation. Links are usually editorial votes given by choice, and link-based analysis has greatly improved the quality of web search. Selling links muddies the quality of link-based reputation and makes it harder for many search engines (not just Google) to return relevant results. When the Berkeley college newspaper has six online gambling links (three casinos, two for poker, and one bingo) on its front page, it’s harder for search engines to know which links can be trusted.
