Adwords vs AdSense

Recently one of our designers ask me “What’s the difference between ‘AdWords’ and ‘AdSense?’” With it being so long since I had to actually articulate the differences, it took me a bit to come up with a simple answer that made sense. Basically I said that AdWords is for those looking to promote and advertise their businesses on the web, and AdSense is for website owners looking to make some money by placing some advertising on their site.
Now, being aware of how quickly things change these days (did you know that they actually say coffee is good for you? Wait, now they say it’s bad for you.), I wanted to check out the official difference from Google itself.
To make a short search story long (come on, do you think Google would make it hard to find the answers in their own search engine?), I had it basically right. Besides a few extra paragraph of marketing fluff, my explanation of AdWords vs AdSense was spot on (see for yourself: AdWords here and AdSense here).
Now, I also wanted to see if others had the same question. The answer: a resounding YES. See all the posts that come up when you search for ‘adwords vs adsense.’ Quite a bit.
